Allegories
The Underftanding is like the Sun, which
gives light and life to the whole intellectual
world; but the Memory, regarding thofe things
only that are paft, is like the Moon which is
new and full, and has her wane by turns.
On the tower of Ambition hangs the dial of
Induftry, where the Sun of good fortune marks
the time and progrefs of Friendfhip on the
figure of Ambitin.
Wit is like a lily. The one is as pleafing to
the ear, as the other is to the eye. Wit naturally
fades, and if not timely gathered foon
withers and dies.
